Book 1 - Staging(Recalled to Life)

Throughout Book 1 it becomes evident that the themes of resurrection will play a major role throughout the novel when Lucie is reunited with her imprisoned father. Though Doctor Manette was 'recalled to life' he has endured great mental trauma during his imprisonment and acts as much like a machine devoid of life and its passions. Lucie, however, revives the Doctor with her love, as the Doctor later reveals, Lucie, the daughter he never beheld, was the one thing he lived and dreamed of during his tortuous stay. Due to his apparent mental illness, Dickens posses the question of whether or not any attempt at resurrection should be made at one so clearly lost. However, because of Lucie's care and perseverance for a father she never knew, he comes around, or at least he seems to.
